Positive. Results. Balboa City School, WASC accredited, and Honey Bear Preschool have dynamically grown, from the founding of a La Jolla Storefront school in 1992, to an education program that encompasses two school sites and educates over two hundred and fifty students. Instead of one teacher we now employ over forty. From all over the world, families travel to San Diego, struggle to obtain I-20 education visas, to attend these awarding winning, and forward thinking programs. Graduates typically move on to illustrious colleges and careers. Average students quickly adjust to their new surroundings and to the shock and delight of parents are quickly earning A’s. Even failing students realize that this program is dynamic, effective and interesting. Children with attention issues find themselves paying rapt attention to curriculum which they find fascinating and personally rewarding. And who wouldn’t enjoy small classes, mentoring, animation, special effects, living history, seminar classes, sailing, sports and internships at museums, wild life rescue missions, theaters and places of business, Taking advantage of the latest research in cognitive psychology, and neuropsychology, this new creative environment reaches the brightest and best part of each child’s learning capacity. Failure is not an option as students are readily inspired to ask “what went wrong?” and how they may correct it. Oppositional behavior evaporates as quickly as the morning mist. Internships, theatre, competitions, and extracurricular activities, such as sports, or even beginning college while still in high school empower children to take the next step toward independence, responsibility, and maturity. Adjacent to the cultural center of San Diego, the Prado of Balboa Park, we are never lacking for intellectual stimulation; Shakespeare, live theatre, special guest lectures or perhaps a poetry reading in a world-class sculpture garden. Balboa City School does not encourage the use of medication for ADHD because all children are creative, intelligent and dynamic. Rather, we work together through our blend of academics and positive feedback and cognitive interventions, to reach the most gifted aspect of each child. Psychiatrists are often so delighted with the “new” child, they suggest discontinuing medication altogether. Our students are among the best behaved – not because they have to be – but because they want to be. Rather than tease and bully, they support each other and celebrate their differences. No child needs to be “gifted” to attend our programs, but we shall strive to help them discover how they are gifted. |
