Chuck Russo specializes in the design, installation and service of Geothermal Heat Pump systems.
How does Geothermal Work?
Geothermal systems utilize ground loops to transfer heat to and from the earth to your home. Water is pumped through the loop to transfer the heat, much like the cooling system in your automobile transfers heat away from your engine. Antifreeze may be added to insure good flow at lower temperatures.
The unit's heat pump raises the heat from the ground loop to warm the air (or water) up to a level which can be moved into your home using your existing air ducts (or radiant tubing).
By utilizing the heat in the ground, geothermal systems are able to provide high levels of efficiency for heating your home during the winter months. Efficiencies of 400% and greater over conventional heating systems are not uncommon.
The transferred heat can also be used for heating hot water.
And because air conditioning units utilize heat pump technology, your geothermal system can also serve to cool your house in the summer months. In this mode, the ground loop transfers unwanted heat back down into the ground. This heat can also assist in heating your hot water as an additional efficiency to your system.
